grandpa takes mommy 101

the seane in front of me at the check out today at smiths:

"how about we let tyler hold the balloons now and you can hold them when we get in the car." says grandpa cheerfully

as both boys swat hard at the balloons grandpa holds a bouquet of flowers in one hand, a card in the other and asks little brother to pick out a candy bar mommy will like. the boy proceeds to take out several candy bars as the checker waits and tells grandpa she likes all of them and he will help her eat what she doesnt want.

"ok just give me this one." grandpa replies after taking one out of the boys hand.

"that one is dark chocolate grandpa" says tyler, as little brother keeps talking about all the candy bars

"dark?" says grandpa, "uh, ok? do you have regular? are they the same price?" he asks the checker as he turns back to the candy stand apologizing for holding up the line, looking more and more flustered by the second.

candy bar boy is told to put them all back so he smashes them in place forcing them to stay.
grandpa turns to the cashier to pay for his gesture of kindness he is trying to show his daughter as he pays a higher price taking care of these boys for maybe an hour before he gets them back to grandma.

"tyler! dont! hold the card." grandpa says with just a little more sterness than before, as tyler is trying to stuff the card in the slot where the conveyer belt meets the scanner.

grandpa pays with a card, and with one hand holding the bouquet of flowers he takes the pen with a slight hesitation as he realizes he will have to sign with one hand. how will he hold the paper? the cashier lends no assistance. he holds it with his elbow as he painfully signs, which many a mother has done. all the while the boys are still punching the balloons and talking insesently about who knows what.

"ok, lets go" grandpa says after a deep breath
